How to Take On Your Fear of the Dentist

Many people suffer from a fear of the dentist, also known as dental anxiety. This can prevent you from getting the regular dental checkups you need, causing problems with your oral health. Dr. Caleb A. Robinson, a dentist in New Philadelphia, OH, takes care to make sure he and his team are educated and caring to help patients with their dental fear.new philadelphia, ohio dentist

The Importance of Routine Dental Care

While you may not think that going to the dentist is essential, regular dental care is just as important as brushing and flossing. Dr. Robinson is able to catch many oral health concerns early. Things like gum disease may not show early symptoms that you can catch on your own.

In addition, issues you may see as mere cosmetic problems can be more serious than you think. For example, cracks or chips in your teeth can lead to tooth decay. Getting a cleaning from a dental hygienist also helps prevent tooth decay better than you can get at home. Their special tools can reach plaque in places you aren’t able to.

Patient Education and Communication is Key

One of the ways Dr. Robinson and his staff calm dental fear is by making sure our patients are educated. If a patient knows exactly how their dental procedure will work, it can help prepare them before it happens. We’ll make sure you know exactly what to expect, even if you’re just here for a dental cleaning and checkup.

We also make it a goal to develop personal relationships with our patients. We don’t want you to feel like you’re just another cog in the machine when you come to our dental practice. Discussing your dental fear lets us know exactly where your anxiety lies, so we can do our best to prevent it from flaring up during your visit.

Sedation Dentistry

At our office, we also offer sedation dentistry to assist with even the worst cases of dental anxiety. Before going through with sedation dentistry, a complete evaluation will need to be done. Dr. Robinson will look through your entire medical history and talk with you personally to make sure sedation dentistry is a viable option for you. Since we offer two forms of sedation, we’ll determine which one is ideal for you if you’re a good candidate.

First, we offer nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. With this option, you’re able to drive to and from your appointment yourself. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through the nose and takes effect immediately. You can be relaxed and calm while still being alert throughout the procedure. If the dentist has any questions, you should be able to answer

The other option we offer is oral sedation. This is a deeper form of sedation and you’ll take the pill hours before your procedure. You’ll need a ride to and from the office for this form of sedation. In some cases, Dr. Robinson may recommend utilizing both forms of sedation at the same time.
