How Dental Implants Work
The Restoration
The dental restoration looks and functions like a natural tooth. Dental restorations are made from high-quality dental materials that mirror the life-like appearance of your adjacent teeth. Depending on the number of missing teeth and their location, Dr. Robinson can fabricate a dental crown, bridge or permanent denture to integrate with your implant(s). Taking into consideration your facial structure, the coloration and size of your teeth as well as the overall appearance of your smile, Dr. Robinson will create a restoration that is singularly and precisely made to meet your needs.
The Abutment
An abutment is a small metal or ceramic piece used to anchor crowns or bridges onto dental implants. The abutment is attached to the top of the implant at the base of the gumline. Its purpose is to permanently hold the dental crown in place.
The Implant
The dental implant is made from biocompatible titanium and acts as a replacement root system. Dr. Robinson places the implant into a healthy, empty root socket. The dental implant generally takes anywhere from 3-6 months to stably integrate with the bone tissue. Depending on the patient’s needs, they may receive one, or several implants in one visit.
Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants provide many oral health benefits:
- Boosts self-confidence
- Creates a natural, beautiful smile
- Enables a varied diet without restriction
- Supports bone retention
- Maintains facial integrity
Dental Implants for a Better Denture
One dental implant can be used to replace a single missing tooth, or multiple implants may be placed to stabilize a partial or complete denture. Dr. Robinson may recommend the addition of dental implants to improve the stability and comfort of an existing denture or partial. If you wear a denture or partial, you may benefit from dental implants, especially if you experience movement of your denture while eating or speaking.
The addition of dental implants can help patients feel more confident in their smile. Dental implants help to support bone and gum health while holding dentures or partials securely in place – providing self-assurance when smiling or chewing. Perhaps most importantly, implants mimic natural tooth roots by integrating into bone, maintaining the shape of your jawbone and preserving facial structure. Long lasting facial structure is an important element of a youthful appearance.
